KIRBY LEEKE – REGISTERED COMPANY AUDITOR
Kirby completed his accounting degree at the Queensland University of Technology (then Queensland Institute of Technology) and then completed the educational requirements for a computer degree on a part time basis.
Kirby worked for 5 years as an auditor with the firm that is now KPMG Peat Marwick (one of the largest accounting firms in the world) before joining the business that was started by his father in 1959 (approx. 20 years previously).
As a computer audit specialist for Peat Marwick in the early 1970's, Kirby was totally responsible for writing all the computer audit programs for the firm during his employment with them.
On joining Malcolm V. Leeke & Co in early 1982, he assumed the role of company accountant for Betta Stores Ltd. and was appointed Company Secretary in April 1997. As the company grew, they appointed their own accounting staff, but Kirby still acted as the independent accountant on the Company’s Finance and Audit Committee until 2005 (Including chairman for the last 2 years). Over the 20 years Kirby was associated with the Betta Stores Ltd, the company grew from a small Queensland based company to a large Australian Public Company with annual sales through its retail outlets nearing $500 million - one of the largest electrical retailers in Australia .
In 1991, Kirby started a company - Australian Commercial Traders Pty Ltd, a company to supply services to small business clients. From its small beginnings, in 15 years this company now has annual turnover in excess of $8,000,000. In 1989, Kirby was asked to be an independent director for a redundancy Trust that was being established with equal representation between unions and employers. A major public company was appointed to administer the business, but due to a number of problems and errors, they resigned, and Kirby was appointed administrator of that business (another role he still completes). This business has now grown to have assets of approx $22,000,000. Kirby was appointed Company Secretary in 1997.
In 1997, Kirby was appointed as a director of the aged persons home at Sandgate that cares for 600 aged residents. In July 2000, as well as being director, he was appointed Treasurer of the whole complex. This complex merged with a similar complex in Cairns in December 2000 and Townsville in 2002, which now provides care for an additional 400 residents.
In 1998, Kirby started a company - Electro Industry Group Queensland Ltd with the express purpose of employing and training apprentices in the electrical industry in Queensland . To date that company employs over 400 apprentices, and has plans to expand to 600 within the next 2 years. Kirby is a director and Company Secretary of that company.
